Vientiane to Kunming South is the longest single cross-border option on the China–Laos Railway — about 1,001 km from the Lao capital all the way to Kunming, Yunnan’s provincial capital.
Journey time and distance
At roughly 1,001 km, this is the full end-to-end international journey — realistically 10+ hours including the border stop — passing through Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang, Boten, Mohan, Xishuangbanna, Puer and Yuxi.
Fares
Fares start from around $105 for Second class (checked live on our own booking system in September 2026) — see the search box above for current fares and seat classes.
Border crossing what to expect
At the Boten/Mohan border, all passengers disembark with luggage for exit and entry immigration checks, typically around an hour, before re-boarding the same train. Arrange your Chinese visa in advance — it isn’t issued at the border — and complete China’s Health Declaration form online within 24 hours of departure.
Why travellers take this route
The direct rail alternative to flying for travellers going from Vientiane all the way to Kunming and its onward high-speed rail network across China.
Booking tips
- Given the length of the trip, First or Business class is worth considering.
- Many travellers break this journey with stopovers in Luang Prabang or Xishuangbanna rather than riding through in one sitting.
- Lao-side tickets open only a few days before departure — plan a combined itinerary with that short window in mind.
