Travel documents

Traveling on the Laos–China Railway (LCR) is modern and efficient, but proper preparation is essential—especially for international routes. Below is a practical checklist to ensure a smooth journey.

1. Required Documents

Identification

Valid identification is mandatory for boarding and may be checked multiple times during your trip.

  • Passport (Mandatory):
All passengers must carry a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the travel date.
  • Visa (If Required):
Ensure you have the correct visa for Laos and/or China, depending on your route. Apply in advance, as visa-on-arrival options are limited.
  • Train Ticket:
    Always double-check:
    • Travel date and time
    • Train number
    • Seat class and seat number
  • Travel Insurance (Recommended):
Not compulsory, but highly recommended for coverage of medical issues, delays, or cancellations.
  • Emergency Contacts:
Keep contact details for your embassy or consulate, especially when crossing borders.
  • Payment Methods:
Bring local currency (LAK/CNY) or a credit/debit card for station purchases or onboard services.

2. Travel Procedures

At the Station

  • Arrive at least 40–60 minutes before departure
  • Have your passport and ticket ready for inspection
  • Large stations may require extra time due to security and passenger volume

Ticket & Identity Verification

  • Present your passport and ticket at the gate
  • Ensure the name on your ticket matches your passport exactly
  • Boarding may be denied if details do not match

Security Screening

  • All passengers must pass through airport-style security checks
  • Luggage is scanned, and prohibited items will be confiscated
  • You may be asked to open your bags for inspection
