Luang Prabang to Mohan covers 168 km, a cross-border trip from Laos’s heritage city to Mohan, the Chinese railway town right at the border.
Journey time and distance
At about 168 km, expect around 2-2.5 hours including the border stop, passing through Boten.
Fares
Fares start from around $39 for Second class (checked live on our own booking system in September 2026) — see the search box above for the current fare.
Border crossing what to expect
At the Boten/Mohan border, all passengers disembark with luggage for exit and entry immigration checks, typically around an hour, before re-boarding the same train. Arrange your Chinese visa in advance — it isn’t issued at the border — and complete China’s Health Declaration form online within 24 hours of departure.
Why travellers take this route
Mohan itself is mainly a border-crossing point rather than a destination, so most passengers are continuing onward into Yunnan toward Xishuangbanna or beyond.
Booking tips
- If Mohan isn’t your final stop, check whether booking straight through to your actual China destination works out better.
