Border crossing what to expect
At the Boten/Mohan border, all passengers disembark with luggage for exit and entry immigration checks, typically around an hour, before re-boarding the same train. Arrange your Chinese visa in advance — it isn’t issued at the border — and complete China’s Health Declaration form online within 24 hours of departure.
Why travellers take this route
A direct rail alternative to flying between Luang Prabang and Kunming, connecting Laos’s heritage city to Yunnan’s high-speed rail network.
Booking tips
- Given the distance, First or Business class is worth considering, and many travellers break the journey with a stopover in Xishuangbanna.
